Curriculum Impact and Outcomes

At Courtlands we monitor the impact of the curriculum through assessing the progress made with:

  • Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP) and Individual Education Programmes (IEP)

  • The early years curriculum for those who are in the reception year

  • The pre-formal curriculum for those who are not engaged in subject specific learning yet, which includes the use of the Engagement Model

  • The English curriculum, including Read, Write Inc.

  • The maths curriculum

  • The wellbeing curriculum including: healthy mind, healthy body, exploration, wider world, creativity & social development

  • Other non-curriculum specific areas such as attendance and behaviour communication data

Children are provided with the opportunity to learn a wider range of skills and information than specific assessment criteria focus on. We do not solely teach to assessment measures. Children are exposed to sequences of lessons that provide a well-rounded curriculum that is individually tailored to meet individual needs. The curriculum and assessment systems are under constant review to ensure that we always meet the continually evolving needs of the children.

We have a statutory duty to report the following to the Department for Education and the Local Authority:

  • EYFS (reception)

  • The Year 1 phonics screening check

  • The Year 2 phonics screening check (for pupils who did not meet the standard in year 1)

  • Core subjects at the end of Key Stage 1 (year 2)

  • The multiplication check (year 4)

  • Core subjects at the end of Key Stage 2 (year 6)

For the overwhelming majority of children at Courtlands, it is not appropriate to assess the children through SATs testing, therefore we carry out teacher assessments and report against a set of pre-key stage standards determined by the Department for Education. Similarly, it is not always appropriate for the children to take the phonics screening check or the multiplication check, in which case a child would be disapplied.
